A Few Things To Note!

1.  We still need your report card envelope if you have not turned it back in.  It is really helpful so I know if you received the report card.  If you have any questions, please contact me.

2.  There will be no spelling words for the next two weeks.  This is so that students can focus more on Expo work.  We will resume when we come back from Spring Break.

3.  Expo takes place in just two weeks on March 31st.  Your student will need to be in our room from 5:45 to 6:15.  If they have a sibling that goes during that time, we can work something out if you let me know.

4.  We are in full Expo mode.  This gets stressful even though I try VERY HARD to not make it so.  Please support your child in any way that you can.

5.  We will be going to Lansing in about a month on a fabulous field trip!  Look for a field trip form in next week's Friday Folder.

Expo is ALMOST here!

Can you help?

We are all thankful that our children who have food insecurity at home have access to meals while they are in school.  However, access to food during the summer months can be challenging for many of our families.

Each spring, the local Downtown Rotary Club partners with our local food bank, Food Gatherers, to collect non-perishable food items that will be used to feed our families during the summer months.  Once again, we in the Ann Arbor Public Schools are participating in this food drive that benefits our students, our families, our senior citizens, and our neighbors.

During this week, March 6 – 10, Chartwell’s Food Services will be delivering food collection boxes to each of our school buildings.  The canned food drive will run from March 13 – March 24, 2017, and we hope everyone can contribute something.  Even one item is a big help when all are added together.

Suggested contributions:

  • For summer, the food bank is in particular need of high-protein products such as peanut butter, tuna, canned meats, beans, chili, hearty soups and stews, plus canned fruit, baby food/formula and Ensure or other nutritional supplement drinks.

  • Anyone who finds financial contributions a more convenient way to help, is encouraged to do so!  Financial gifts of $25 or more to Food Gatherers through the Rotary Fight Summer Hunger Food and Fund Drive will be matched dollar for dollar through the Harold and Kay Peplau Match Challenge.  A gift of $25 will provide enough food for 150 meals when you include the match!  To give online:  www.foodgatherers.org/rotary

Each year, 44,500 people turn to Food Gatherers to feed themselves and their families. This includes 9,717 children and 2,829 seniors.  All items stay in our county and helps local families who are our neighbors, relatives, friends and co-workers.

Thank you for your contribution of food and/or funds to support our community

We are starting our poetry unit!

3/6/17
Maggie Jones
Hello Families,

As a student teacher, I have the very exciting opportunity to plan and teach my own unit. We are starting the unit in the classroom this week, and it is about poetry. We will be learning about and practicing writing different kinds of poems, like haikus, shape poems, limericks, quatrains, and free verse poems. We will also be using this time to learn about different kinds of figurative language, such as metaphor, simile, rhyme, alliteration, and repetition.

For guided reading and read-aloud time, we will be listening to and reading some famous and popular poems. We will be thinking about their themes and ideas, and digging into what they really mean. If your child has a favorite poem or poet, I encourage you to share it with me or Mrs. Bertelson, so we can see about reading it in class!

The students will also be picking poems they wrote to edit and revise. These poems will be published. We will be having an informal “poetry slam” where students will be able to read their poetry for their peers at the end of the unit. Look out for another email to see when that date will be! Please feel free to come! We would love to have you there to see what we are doing.

I look forward to getting to learn about and discuss poetry with your children! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Maggie Jones
