We are starting our poetry unit!

3/6/17
Maggie Jones
Hello Families,

As a student teacher, I have the very exciting opportunity to plan and teach my own unit. We are starting the unit in the classroom this week, and it is about poetry. We will be learning about and practicing writing different kinds of poems, like haikus, shape poems, limericks, quatrains, and free verse poems. We will also be using this time to learn about different kinds of figurative language, such as metaphor, simile, rhyme, alliteration, and repetition.

For guided reading and read-aloud time, we will be listening to and reading some famous and popular poems. We will be thinking about their themes and ideas, and digging into what they really mean. If your child has a favorite poem or poet, I encourage you to share it with me or Mrs. Bertelson, so we can see about reading it in class!

The students will also be picking poems they wrote to edit and revise. These poems will be published. We will be having an informal “poetry slam” where students will be able to read their poetry for their peers at the end of the unit. Look out for another email to see when that date will be! Please feel free to come! We would love to have you there to see what we are doing.

I look forward to getting to learn about and discuss poetry with your children! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Maggie Jones
